Seven Valley Scoop: Cortland Area News

Casey Jean Chapman is a Cortland Resident, professional musician and citizen journalist.

Casey grew up in a small town the Capital Region of New York with her mother and father, her dogs and her imagination.  In high school, Casey founded the Catholic High SkyCab, the school’s online newspaper.  She won a journalism scholarship to Green Mountain College where she studied Environmental Policy and worked for the Mountaineer newspaper as a staff writer.

Casey left Green Mountain College to pursue a career in music.  Shortly after making this jump, she met her future husband, Dave Shaver.  The two perform as the regionally known acoustic duo Almost Awake.

While working as a musician, Casey attended Hudson Valley Community College to learn more about Journalism and worked as the managing editor of the Hudsonian Newspaper.  This position allowed her to learn about the importance of the media in the life of a community and strengthened her resolve to make a difference through the written word.

Casey helped the Town of Halfmoon develop and launch their newsletter The Halfmoon Navigator.  She also worked with the sales department of 74 State Hotel on marketing and promotional materials.

Casey operates a home childcare business, enjoys being domestic and being outdoors and is passionate about all things local.
