Greek Peak Opens, Other Ski Areas Close Behind

Greek Peak is alive with skiers this weekend after a week of below-freezing temperatures and contant snowfall allowed the Virgil resort to open for the season, a week ahead of schedule.

The mountain currently has two lifts and four trails open with a two to 16-inch base depth and a machine groomed packed powder surface.

Staff at Labrador Mountain in Truxton project a November 28th opening.  Toggenburg Winter Sports Center in Fabius and Song Mountain in Tully are both making snow, although neither have projected an opening date.

Four other ski resorts in New York are also open for the season: Holiday Valley and Bristol Mountain in western New York and Hunter and Windham Mountains in the Catskills.

Welcome to the Community

Hello and welcome to the Seven Valley Scoop!

Do you live near Cortland, NY?  Do you care about local issues and events?  Do you wish you had more choice in where you get your information?

This is a blog about you: the residents and friends of the Seven Valley region!  Here in the Cortland area, we don’t have a lot of news outlets, particularly alternative ones.  Sure, there’s plenty to choose from in Ithaca, Syracuse and Binghamton, but Cortland is basically a one show town when it comes to daily news.

I’m hoping to change that with a little research, a little thought and a lot of input from the community.

This blog will contain a few different types of posts:

News Roundups: These posts contain briefs on local events and breaking stories, plus links to full articles from other media outlets.  News roundups will be daily.

Original Articles: My own research and writing on important Seven Valley issues.  They will always be well researched, fact-checked articles with reputable sources.  Original articles will be written in a news story format.  These posts will be periodic.

Opinion Pieces: Most days I will write an opinion piece, similar to what you would read in a newspaper column.  I may write about an observation, live event or idea I’ve been pondering.  I may speak frankly about problems I see in my neighborhood.  Whatever I write will be my own opinion, written in the first person.  I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you this way.

Spotlights: Similar to original articles, spotlights are original fact-based work about the local area.  In these pieces, I will focus on a local business, resident or event.  These articles be based off interviews, personal experience, primary sources or a combination of the above.  They will be posted periodically.

Reviews: Reviews are reviews.  I believe you understand the concept.  Anything from the dairy parade to Byrne Dairy.  They will be posted periodically as well.

Of course, you are welcome to submit articles or ideas for articles.  If you have a business or organization you’d like covered, let me know.  Any way community members decide to get involved is a good way.  Building community and providing information are the goals of the Seven Valley Scoop.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you back here soon.
